The President of Yarmouk University, Professor Islam Massad, met with the President of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) Council, Dr. Ricardo Leon-Borquez, who was visiting Yarmouk University to investigate the procedures and steps implemented by Yarmouk Faculty of Medicine to obtain the international accreditation for medical education. Massad emphasized the interest attached by the University administration to the Faculty of Medicine, mentioning that it is one of the most distinguished faculties in the university and that its faculty members are graduates from the most prestigious international universities in the medical field. He then pointed to the interest given by the Faculty of Medicine to the issue of ethics related to medical professions and the importance of including it in the curriculum and study plans of the faculty. He also stated that Yarmouk is interested in obtaining the international accreditation for its various programs, as evident in the Faculty of Pharmacy, which obtained the international ACPE accreditation, and the computer engineering, electronics engineering, and industrial engineering departments at Al-Hijjawi Faculty for Engineering Technology, which obtained the American academic accreditation for engineering and technology (ABET).

Leon-Borquez, in return, confirmed that his visit to Yarmouk aims at reviewing the procedures implemented by the Faculty of Medicine to obtain the international accreditation for medical education, the medical laboratories in the Faculty, the extent of readiness of classrooms, the study plans used in the Faculty and their compatibility with the requirements of international accreditation for medical education. He stressed that the accreditation is a measure for the quality of the faculty’s program and whether that program copes with the best international standards and practices. He also pointed out that obtaining the international accreditation by the Faculty of Medicine will help students get a better opportunity to complete their postgraduate studies in international universities, get certain training and specialization opportunities, and obtain job opportunities in various countries.

The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Manar Al-Lawama, gave a presentation about the faculty, where she reviewed the establishment of the faculty, the number of its students and faculty members, the study plans, the examination and evaluation system, the faculty’s scientific laboratories, and the methods of teaching and training.

A master's thesis entitled "Obstacles of Social Adaptation for People with Visual Impairment in the Jordanian Society" was discussed in the Department of Sociology and Social Work in the Faculty of Arts at Yarmouk University. The thesis was submitted by student Faten Al-Ismail, who suffers from complete visual impairment, in the presence of the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Musa Rababa'a. The study aimed at identifying the obstacles of social adaptation at the social, academic, and environmental levels for people with visual impairments in the Jordanian society. The researcher deployed the qualitative approach through conducting a programmed (regulated) interview to collect data from a study sample that consisted of (15) male and female students with visual impairments at Yarmouk University. The study showed that academic obstacles ranked first, followed by environmental obstacles, and finally social obstacles. The discussion committee consisted of the thesis supervisor, Dr. Abdullah Kazan, Dr. Abdul-Khaleq Khatatneh (internal examiner), and Dr. Muhammad Hasinat (external examiner). Thus, the committee recommended granting the student Faten Al-Ismail a master's degree in sociology and social work.

A student project titled "Smart Gloves Based on the Internet of Things for the Deaf and Dumb" by students Husam El-Din Musallam, Afnan Al-Saqer, and Muhammad Musallam from Hijjawi Faculty for Engineering Technology at Yarmouk University received support from King Abdullah II Fund for Development in cooperation with the Jordanian Center for Design and Development. The project, which was supervised by Dr. Sherif Abdel-Razek from the Department of Communication Engineering, aims at designing smart gloves that can convert the sign language into spoken language in both Arabic and English and that can display speech on a touch screen. Also, the gloves can help the elderly who are deaf and dumb to control home appliances and take periodic readings of the vital indicators of the body, such as heartbeats, body temperature, and blood pressure. In case of any abnormal readings, an alert is sent to the doctor or specialist using the Internet of Things and the cellular communication network.

The President of Yarmouk University, Professor Islam Massad, said that Yarmouk University is always keen to honor distinguished students and support them, considering that they represent the wealth and future of the country, as clearly stated in the royal visions of His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al-Hussein. He added, during his sponsorship of the ceremony organized by the Department of Public Relations and Media at the University to honor students who won local, regional, and international awards, that the University follows the directives of His Majesty the King concerning the need to integrate the paths of education, knowledge, and science with extracurricular activities, thus empowering Youth, integrating them into programs designed to increase their awareness of various national issues and challenges, expanding the base of their participation in public life, and supporting their participation in international events. Massad then emphasized the value of such students in terms of promoting the University’s reputation and academic status, thanking the members of the academic and administrative staff supervising projects, competitions, and student initiatives.

The student Yazan Al-Shnik delivered a speech on behalf of the honorees, where he said that what Yarmouk University offers to students deserves much praise and appreciation. He explained that the University faculties support talented students and keep following up with them to overcome any obstacles and to augment and achieve goals. Al-Shnik then appreciated the efforts of the faculty members who teach and supervise distinguished students instilling in them values, morals, inspiration, ambition, and collaboration.

At the end of the ceremony, which was attended by the Vice-Presidents of the University, Professor Mowaffaq Al-Amoush and Professor Samer Samarah, the Assistant President of the University, Professor Ziyad Zureikat, and a number of deans of faculties and supervisors of honored students from among the faculty and administrative staff, Massad handed certificates and gifts of appreciation to students and supervisors.

Noteworthy is that the honorees are selected due to their outstanding results in competitions and festivals at the international, regional, and local levels in the fields of information technology, computer science, cybersecurity, media, scientific research projects, design and arts, engineering and robot design, entrepreneurship, science, medical sciences, and geography. The ceremony also honored the students who participated in student debates and the activities of youth summer 2022.

On behalf of the President of Yarmouk University, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Muhammad Khalaf Thiabat, sponsored the Ramadan Iftar party organized by the Student Welfare Department in the Deanship, in the presence of the First Secretary in the Indonesian Embassy to Amman, Muhammad Hartantyo, and the Saudi Cultural Attaché, Dr. Issa bin Fahd Al-Rumaih.

In his speech during the gathering, Thiabat said that Yarmouk University, based on its strategic plan, is interested in establishing permanent communication with its international students and enabling them to integrate into the University community and Jordanian society. Thiabat emphasized that through the Deanship of Student Affairs, Yarmouk University spares no effort in organizing international student activities, events, and gatherings and supporting students to obtain the necessary education and knowledge to meet the demands of the labor market in their homelands.

In his speech delivered on behalf of the international students, the President of the Arab and International Students Club, the representative of the Palestinian community, student Abdullah Al-Madhoun, expressed his thanks and appreciation to the University and its Deanship of Student Affairs for their interest in holding such activities and participating international students such remarkable times.

The Iftar banquet included dishes that represent the 13 Arab and international communities participating in the event. Also, the students of the Thai community presented a performance that embodied the customs and traditions of Ramadan in Thailand, and one of the religious chanting teams presented religious songs expressing the virtue of the blessed month of Ramadan.

On the sidelines of the ceremony, Thiabat, with the participation of Hartantyo and Al-Rumaih, handed certificates of appreciation to the students representing the communities.

It is noteworthy that Yarmouk University includes approximately 3,300 international students representing 48 nationalities around the world.

Yarmouk University has recently obtained the five-star rating of QS ranking system, an achievement that reflects the University's excellence in meeting the demands and standards adopted by QS Stars for evaluating the performance of world universities. This achievement is significant for the University, as it contributes to marketing and promoting the university locally, regionally, and globally. It will positively reflect in attracting more Arab and international students, and networking with various institutions and universities around the world.

The University's application to QS Stars was subjected to eight evaluation criteria: First, the standard of learning and teaching, which is related to the evaluation of the educational environment in terms of the ratio of the number of students to the number of faculty members, the extent of students’ satisfaction with the quality of education, the percentage of graduates, and the percentage of faculty members holding the PhD. The second criterion is related to measuring the employment rate of the university graduates, employers' satisfaction with the characteristics of graduates, and the career guidance for students. The third criterion deals with globalism in terms of the percent of international students and teachers at the university. The fourth criterion includes the academic development of faculty members, in addition to the university's membership in local, regional, and international academic networks.

The fifth criterion is the educational environment that is related to health, sport, and library services provided to students and cadre. The sixth criterion focuses on the culture and arts: it includes the quality of museums, cinema halls, radio services, and the artistic and cultural events and awards obtained by the university. The seventh criterion is inclusiveness, which focuses on the university's interest in helping students through loans and grants and the extent of its commitment to providing services to students with special needs. The eighth criterion is the strength of academic programs, which measures the level of students' satisfaction with their university's academic services and the local and international accreditation for its academic programs.

The President of the University, Professor Islam Massad, congratulated the University's teaching and administrative staff, and its students on this great achievement, indicating that the Five-Star Rank is a clear indication of the University’s endeavor towards professional leadership and excellence in the fields of education, scientific research, and community service. He also asserted that the achievement represents the vision of Yarmouk university since its establishment in 1976 in being a beacon of excellence in the various fields of knowledge at the local, regional, and global levels. He also pointed to the role of the Accreditation and Quality Assurance Center in contributing to the University's strategy and permanent aspirations towards innovation and excellence.

The activities of the tenth scientific conference entitled "Sports in Light of Global Developments - Qatar 2022 World Cup as a Model” and organized by the Faculty of Physical Education were launched at Yarmouk University for two days in the conference and seminar building. The President of the University, Professor Islam Massad, during his sponsorship of the conference, said that sport has become a strategy adopted by countries to define their identities and promote ideologies, beliefs, culture, customs, tradition, and values. He then pointed out that such a conference is qualitative in the field of sport, as it represents a valuable opportunity for exchanging scientific research strategies in the field of sport sciences, strengthening local, Arab, and international research and scientific relations, discussing cooperation frameworks, and encouraging youth to participate in sport research projects. Moreover, he emphasized that Qatar, during its hosting of 2022 World Cup, proved itself as a role model in overcoming obstacles and difficulties, urging participants to articulate some recommendations and conclusions that benefit the Jordanian, Arab, and international sport sector.

The Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Ratib Al-Daoud, said that Yarmouk University continues, over the course of 47 years of giving and building, to confirm its distinction as a scientific edifice that is keen on leadership and excellence in the fields of education, scientific research, and community service. He explained: We are proud of hosting experts and scholars in the field of physical education and other disciplines to address certain scientific issues that contribute to humans’ prosperity and success. Dr. Badria Al-Hadabi from Sultan Qaboos University at Oman delivered the speech of participants, where she emphasized that the convening of the conference comes at a time when we are in desperate need of continuous research on sport sciences and its various disciplines. She then acknowledged the elite participation of researchers from different countries, expressing sincere thanks to Yarmouk University for organizing such a pioneering scientific conference.

However, the conference got divided into 8 scientific sessions including 56 scientific papers presented by 120 researchers from 11 Arab countries. The participants addressed various topics and themes, namely physiology of sport training, curricula and teaching methods in physical education, management, sport marketing, choices and standards in physical education and sport facilities, psychological and social sciences in physical education, physical education for people with special needs, biomechanics in physical education, and nutrition for athletes, and women and sports. The researchers concurred that there is a deadly need to build on the achievements of Qatar World Cup for hosting international competitions in various sports, developing faculties of physical education and institutions in the Arab world, and motivating sport federations to benefit from the results of scientific research.

Three researchers from Yarmouk University got funding for their research projects from the Scientific Research and Innovation Support Fund at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Dr. Ahmad Dagamseh from Hijjawi Faculty for Engineering Technology got the support for his research project entitled "Developing a Noninvasive Instrumentation System for Acetone Concentration Measurement in Exhaled Breath". The project is to develop an easy and reliable measurement system to detect and measure the concentration of acetone in the gaseous state of exhaled air using optical technology. Thus, it is to facilitate the detection and diagnosis of many diseases associated with the presence of acetone in exhaled air. However, the project team includes Dr. Qasem Qananwah from the Department of Systems Engineering and Biomedical Informatics from Hijjawi Faculty for Engineering Technology and Dr. Ayman Hammouda from the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science.

The second funded project is for Dr. Qasem Qananwah from Hijjawi Faculty for Engineering Technology, and it is titled " Design and Implementation of Cardiac Output Monitoring System". This project seeks to develop a new technology, i.e. system, capable of measuring the blood flow from the heart in a non-surgical way. Also, the system is to measure the vital signs in the brachial artery using optical technology. However, the project team includes Dr. Ahmad Dagamseh from Hijjawi Faculty for Engineering Technology and Dr. Khaled Ibrahim from the University of Science and Technology.

The third project is by Dr. Mohammed Obeid from the Faculty of Pharmacy, and it is in the Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Sector under the title: “Formulation of Lipid Nanoparticles for MOMIPP Encapsulation to Induce Cancer Cell Death through Novel Non-apoptotic Mechanism (Methiosis)". The project aims at developing a unique preparation for the treatment of cancer cells in a unique way called unsystematic death by using the low-solubility mump compound and encapsulating it inside nanocarriers to improve the compound's solubility and effectiveness. The research team for the project includes Dr. Haneen Amawi and Dr. Alaa Al-Jabali from the Faculty of Pharmacy.

The President of Yarmouk University, Professor Islam Massad, discussed ways of scientific and research cooperation with a delegation from Bonn Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences in Germany headed by the Director of the Office of International Affairs, Dr. Wang Yi. Massad said that the University is always keen to enhance opportunities of cooperation and effective academic and research partnership with various prestigious international universities like the German University of Bonn Rhein-Sieg, which is widely known by the applied side of the various disciplines it offers, including digital journalism, computer science, information systems, and engineering. He also stressed the need to get out of the limitations of traditional education and respond to the changes of the era through the use of modern education methods, such as distance education.

Wang Yi expressed the University of Bonn's readiness to enhance cooperation with Yarmouk in areas of common interest, i.e. exchange experiences and scientific visits for faculty members and students, and conduct joint scientific projects and research in various scientific fields. He then reviewed the establishment of Bonn Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences in Germany, which grants bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees in many disciplines, such as business administration, computer science, engineering majors, journalism, and natural sciences, stressing the University’s interest in the practical aspect of sciences, as it provide students with the necessary skills to meet the demands of the labor market.
