Joint Meeting at "Yarmouk" Discusses Revitalizing Irbid Governorate's Commercial and Tourism Sectors

The President of Yarmouk University, Prof. Malek A. Alsharairi held a joint meeting with the Chairman of the Greater Irbid Municipality Committee, Mr. Emad Al-Azzam, and the President of the Irbid Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Mohammed Al-Shoohah, to discuss ways of enhancing cooperation to revitalize the commercial and tourism sectors across the city and the governorate.

During the meeting, Prof. Alsharairi affirmed Yarmouk University's commitment to leveraging its scientific and academic capabilities and activating a genuine partnership with the Greater Irbid Municipality and the Chamber of Commerce to serve the local community, as he stressed the urgent need to unite efforts to develop a set of future plans and programs aiming at reviving the city's heritage and stimulating the tourism movement in the governorate, particularly since Irbid possesses significant historical and cultural attractions. He also emphasized the importance of marketing these assets globally.

Alsharairi added : based on Yarmouk University strategic plan, it seeks to double the number of its international students from around the world. This endeavor is intended to achieve mutual economic benefits for the city of Irbid by increasing the effectiveness of its commercial sectors and tourism activities.

He also called for formalizing the relationship with the Greater Irbid Municipality through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aiming at organizing the mechanism of the work in various developmental and technical aspects, thereby achieving the public interest of national institutions and maximizing community benefit.

For his part, Mr. Al-Azzam stated that the Municipality seeks to deepen its strategic cooperation with all national institutions in the city, foremost among them Yarmouk University, due to its capabilities represented in scientific research and academic expertise. This partnership is crucial for developing the plans and projects the Municipality intends to implement for the city's advancement, as he highlighted the Municipality's acute need to benefit from the research and technical capabilities available in the university's various faculties to execute major developmental projects, especially in the fields of engineering and environmental planning and project management.

Mr. Al-Azzam also indicated that the Municipality is also working intensively and concurrently to implement a series of measures aimed at supporting the commercial movement and improving the city’s infrastructure. He confirmed that they have actively commenced the project to revive the historical downtown in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce and relevant authorities, with the goal of transforming the commercial center into a preferred destination for both shoppers and visitors.

From another side , Mr. Al-Shoohah expressed the Chamber of Commerce's full readiness to enter into a strategic partnership with Yarmouk University, considering it a fundamental source for supplying the city's commercial market with purchasing power and ensuring the sustainability of the economic movement at the governorate level.

He added that intensive meetings are being held between the Chamber of Commerce and the Municipality to improve the service and regulatory environment around Yarmouk University, ensuring a suitable setting for students and supporting the continuity and growth of commercial establishments near the campus.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the delegation visited the Numismatics Hall at the Faculty of Archaeology and Anthropology, which represents an academic, cultural, national, and humanitarian landmark where Yarmouk University exhibits the origins and evolution of Numismatics throughout the ages.
