5 About the University (The University in Brief) 1. Establishment and Development. The name of Yarmouk University has an historical Arab and Islamic Indications, as it is associated with the Yarmouk River where the eternal battle of Yarmouk took place. And in line with the Hashemite interest in education and in response to the development needs of the community, a royal decree was issued on 24/6/1975 to form the Royal Committee of Yarmouk University. The University commenced its first academic year in 1976/10/9 with a number of students not more than 640 students. This scientific edifice, whose development has been accompanied by the growth of scientific and cultural progress in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, has turned Yarmouk into a prestigious university within a period of less than four decades hosting at present time 35,854 students. It has a distinguished position among institutions of higher education at the local and regional levels. It has been recognized as a permanent source for pushing forward the progress and for enhancing the interaction with the local community, as well as it provides local development institutions and projects with well qualified and trained graduates. The University has witnessed a remarkable increase in the number of students, faculty members, administrative staff, faculties, departments and programs. The University also has witnessed a remarkable development in scientific research and in the establishment of deanships, centers and facilities taking into consideration the importance of the University's regulations, laws and instructions in its path towards excellence, quality and internationalization. 2. University Faculties and Programs The University embodies fifteen faculties, in addition to a language center, and the deanships of students' affairs, and research and postgraduate studies faculty. These colleges offer bachelor's degrees at the undergraduate level, diploma, master's and PhDs degrees in a number of disciplines at the postgraduate level. 3. University Students Yarmouk University enjoys good reputation and high academic standards, so there is a strong desire among students locally and internationally to join many of its programs. The university is a home for students from all over the Kingdom of Jordan, as well as students from different nationalities. The number of Jordanian students is 32354 and the number of international students is 3500.
